Doggies by Sandra Boynton

Marin and I read Doggies by Sandra Boynton. She loves dogs so this was a fun little counting book for her. Before we read the book, I took pictures of each of her little dogs (she has SEVEN! Sheesh) and turned them into magnets. Then we counted and played with them. She has a set of animal magnets that she plays with when I change Hollis' diaper so I thought she might have fun with these too.
She thought it was funny to see her toys.

Getting a closer look.

This picture makes me laugh. When I was getting the dog pictures, I lined them up against the wall.
Marin thought this was a good idea so she moved a couple of them over and joined the line. :o)
(I would minimize her dog collection but she plays with every single one of them. Pinky is still her favorite though. )

Scary

So we thought Marin was our dare devil, but apparently Hollis wants the title. Friday morning I was changing her diaper and realized she was going to need a new outfit. So thinking she was too little to move anywhere, I ran to another room to get her new clothes. Burke was in the room with her but he was playing with Marin and I didn't tell him I was leaving. All of a sudden I heard the thud and then Burke and then Hollis crying. She had pushed herself off the table and fallen head first into her laundry bag. Unfortunately the bag was empty because we had just done laundry so she hit the hardwood floors. We weren't real sure what signs we should be looking for when she projectile vomited about 5 minutes afterwards.  We called the pediatrician and she sent us to the ER immediately. Because it was in the morning, traffic was terrible so we didn't go to the Children's hospital, we just went to the closest hospital, Swedish Covenant Hospital. Swedish doctors examined her and said that everything looked ok and that they would keep us for 4-6 hours for observation. We were so relieved. Our pediatrician called and asked to have a cat scan done just as a precaution. We were counting down until we could go home safe and sound when the ER doctor came in and told us that the scan showed a bruise on her brain and that they needed to transport her to the children's hospital.
My heart stopped.
Burke loaded up everyone in the car and Hollis and I rode in the ambulance to Children's Memorial Hospital. I'm sure the sirens were precautionary but they didn't calm these parents' nerves at all. Burke and I both were so scared and nervous. We made it to the hospital and Children's had a trauma team waiting for us. They were absolutely incredible. So nice and reassuring. Talking and making Hollis smile and communicating to me about everything. They gave us a little hope (again) that everything was ok by saying, "A lot of times hospitals that don't specialize in children often times misread scans, etc." We were so relieved to hear this and so hopeful that it was just a mistake. We were put in an ER "room" to wait for the neurosurgeons and radiologists to look at the cat scan and give their own readings of it. We were so hopeful that it would be nothing. The first round of surgeons looked at it and  we could tell on their faces it wasn't good news. The simply couldn't tell if it was blood or just if Hollis  scan and they thought they would need to do a MRI to get better results.
Again, our hearts stopped.
Not the news we were looking for. So we waited for the radiologists to look at it but by now we were too scared to hope for good news. Once the radiologists looked at it, they had no doubt it was blood in her brain and said we didn't need any more tests because they were positive. So they admitted Hollis into the hospital for 24 hour observation. This was so scary to hear. They told us hundreds of times that this was more common than you think and that the blood would just absorb back into the body with no problems. But you never expect to be talking to a team of neurosurgeons and radiologists about your 2 month old.
They hooked her up to monitors and gave her an IV just in case something happened during the night and she needed surgery. (Again, things we didn't want to hear.) But we stayed the night and Hollis did great. She passed all the tests and the doctors examined her the next morning and we were discharged around noon.
Relief.
Sigh.

We are home now and getting back into our routine. I did hang her hospital bracelet up above the changing table as a gentle reminder that our little girl grows really fast and she is really, really strong. I still get a little (or a LOT) nervous every time I hear a loud thud even if it is Marin playing. I guess it will take a little bit of time to shake that fear away. But we are so very thankful for everyone who prayed for Hollis and has sent kind, encouraging words.

Road Trip

Marin and Hollis went on their first road trip this week. Unfortunately it was for a funeral in southern Illinois. But we learned rather quickly that they are still a little young for road trips. Yikes. Here are few other things we learned from the trip....

1. Hollis HATES her car seat. HATES, HATES, HATES her car seat. I mean it. She hates it. It took quite a bit of entertaining and comforting for the 5 hour drive.
2. Marin loves to SWIM. Our hotel had a pool and she is not at all afraid of the water. We've known this but she hasn't been around a swimming pool since she was around 5 months old so we didn't know if things had changed as she got older. It hasn't. When there is any type of water around, we have to be on CODE RED ALERT because this girl will jump right on it. Makes this momma very nervous. Swim lessons here we come.
3. Marin isn't afraid of dogs AT ALL. It can bark, jump, lick and she will laugh, laugh, laugh. Again, we are going to have to figure out a way to teach her to be somewhat cautious so she doesn't go up to a strange dog and get bitten! But it is so much fun to see her SQUEAL with joy every time she sees a dog.

And a few pictures....

Singing songs and playing with her butterfly!

Nap time.

So cute.
(We did fix her car seat straps.)

A happy moment....

Doodle-y Doo change number 64.
I think she kept doodling so she could get out of the carseat. :o)

Marin needed a turn driving.

Swimming with Daddy.

She had a blast.
The nervous mother found this little life jacket/swim school
safety suit thing. We hope to take her swimming a LOT this summer
to get her used to the water and help teach her a little bit more.

We were packing up and getting ready when I looked over on the bed and saw
the girls lined up perfectly on the bed.
It just looked funny to me. :o)

That's Not My Dinosaur

I randomly picked a handful of books off of Marin's bookshelf to read and do some fun little projects with....
Our first read was That's Not My Dinosaur. It's a touch and feel book that is so cute. I found it at the school yard sale we went a few weekends ago. Love yard sales. But we read it and made play dough dinosaurs. She actually let me read it several times to her. She still has her favorite books but now she really enjoys reading different ones!

Making a "dinosaur".

I just found some play dough accessories (rolling pins, stamps, etc)!

Then we painted "horns" on a dinosaur using our handprints! She used her markers to color her
dinosaur afterwards.

Her handprints!

She really wanted an orange dinosaur. :o)

She REALLY enjoyed the orange marker.

Creativity.

Her finished dinosaur!

We have SkippyJon Jones, Doggies, and Going on a Bear Hunt next!

And just so I don't forget, these are a few of her favorite books right now...

Hot Day=Water Play

We have had two HOT days in a row here. So today we decided to put the pool out and PLAY! I filled it up before lunch so that by the afternoon the water would be warmer. There was one little girl that got a fun surprise after her nap!
So cute.

I had asked her about a million times to turn around and say cheese.
She stood there. Just like that.
I could tell she was laughing though. She thinks she is so funny. Stinker.

Just hanging out chewing on her fingers.

My FAVORITE.
She had so much fun.

Then it became an "in the pool, out of the pool" activity.
She found a different way to climb out every time. It was very entertaining.
